CASTLE LESLIE FOREST WALK
(Recount by Niall Corrigan 4th Class)
On Wednesday 1st of October 2014, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes went on a nature walk to Castle Leslie Forest Park. We were accompanied by Mr. Macklin, Mrs. Dowling and Ms Treanor. We went to study trees and other living things. We went there to continue our work on Biodiversity for our 5th Green Flag.
We set off at 11.30am. First we put on our hi-viz jackets. Then we put on our backpacks and got ready to walk. Mr. Macklin stopped us along the way to look at the bees buzzing in and out of the ivy leaves on the castle wall.

When we arrived at the entrance, Mr Macklin opened the gate. Mrs Dowling divided us into ten teams before giving us clipboards, worksheets and plastic bags. The pupils in my team were Caoimhe, Halle and Matthew. We decided to call ourselves The Deadly Deers.
On our way into the forest, Mr Macklin stopped us at a Redwood tree. It was really big and tall. Ben, Caolán, Channon, Josh and Emily held hands around the tree to find its circumference. When it is divided by 2.5 we will know the age of the tree.

Then we began our treasure hunt. We collected and identified fruits and nuts from trees. We found soft, hard and even spiky things. After that we had to find a shiny thing. It took a while but then I remembered that Mrs Dowling told us that the beech leaf was shiny. We had all the stuff we needed.
Suddenly all the classes veered off the track and into a large clearing. In it, stood a tree with a very large face. On the side was carved F.Boyle Then we played a game a bit like hide and seek. It was called Eagle Eye. Mr Macklin was it and he had to stand on one spot. The rest of us had 30 seconds to hide before Mr Macklin opened his eyes. Then we had to get back home by quietly moving between the trees without being seen. Mr Macklin saw loads of people but I got home.

Next we all sat down to enjoy our lunch. It was heaven sitting on the soft bed of colourful Autumn leaves as the sun shone through the trees. After our picnic we got back on the trail and walked further into the forest. We finished the questions.
At 1.30pm we turned around and headed back to the school. We sang songs along the road. I really enjoyed the walk and hope we go back again soon.
