Straighten Up Ireland
Dr. Amanda McQuaid, together with her assistant - a skeleton named Joseph, showed the children the correct standing and sitting posture. She also supplied the children with a handout of exercises to undertake with the aim to strengthen their spines. Exercises consisted of names such as 'Tilting Stars', 'The Eagle', 'The Hummingbird', 'The Rocker' etc.,, The children can refer to the handout they received from Dr. Amanda McQuaid for a full list of exercises.
Other top tips included the following:
How to carry schoolbags (a rucksack is best option).
Keep bags light.
Having the correct footwear makes it easier to carry a heavy bag.
Take regular exercise.
Limit time at computer or watching TV to 40minutes, staying still is bad for the spine.
Make sure your spine is supported whilst engaged in using a PC or computer console.
The children also designed a poster titled “Straighten Up and Move!”, encouraging the children of Monaghan to improve their posture and get moving.
Congratulations to Matthew Duffy, 4th Class who won an Art Set and a replica of Joseph the skeleton!
