Comprehension Strategy: Fact and Opinion
It is important to recognise in a text what is a fact versus what is someone's opinion. We must ensure to check that what is presented to us is a true fact and not fake news.
Try some of these exercises to help you develop this comprehension skill.

Comprehension Strategy: Inference
A most important strategy to use in our reading of texts.
We must be able to use the material presented to infer other details.
Not all answers to questions will be obvious in a text, so we must learn to use the facts/information before us to infer a suitable, intelligent answer.

- Suggested answers to Inference Guided Reading Task Cards.
- Card 1: Picture of Mountains.
- I see a mountaineer in the picture but I suspect there are more resting in the tent as it is dangerous to climb mountains on ones own. It may be safer to climb with others.
- I think it is cold as the temperature drops a degree for every 100 meters you climb. So warm, rainproof clothing is essential.
- He must feel elated as he is near the summit of the mountain.
- Maybe this is the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest which is 8848.86 metres high. Maybe this was an ambition of the climber to one day scale this mountain.
Card 2: Picture of a child .
- I see a child whose hair is wet with shampoo, so I suspect he is in a bath.
- The child looks pretty happy.
- One does not wear a top in a bath!
Card 3: Picture of a group of musicians.
- These men are busking which means they are playing music outside for others to enjoy. They seek financial support by placing a box/hat on the ground to encourage people who pass by to place some coins into it, helping them earn a living. Buskers often sell a CD of their music. You would often see buskers in large cities like Dublin, maybe on Grafton Street.
- I would suspect they are singing.
- They look happy so they must feel cheerful and content.
- I suspect they are playing popular music, maybe pop/classical/ traditional Irish music as they would wish for their music to be appreciated by many, thus earning them more money. The instruments they are playing include a banjo, guitar and a cello, all instruments where a wide variety of music could be played.
I hope you did well with your answers.
Comprehension Strategy: Author's Purpose.
An author writes for many reasons:
Try the following exercises to see if you can tell the purpose behind the texts.
An author writes for many reasons:
- to persuade or convince the reader to do or believe something ( advertisements: Buy a product)
- to inform or tell the reader more information about a topic (History/Geography topics at school)
- to entertain the reader with an interesting or funny story (fiction/non-fiction stories).
Try the following exercises to see if you can tell the purpose behind the texts.

What number am I thinking of ? |
Tricky Sums but a good Challenge.
Sum number 1: Go to the end of the sum which is 369.
You are then going to work backwards and do the reverse operation to what you are being asked.
So if you are asked to add, then you subtract.
If you are asked to multiply, then you divide.
So here is the answer to number 1.
Start a the end number which is 369.
Add 6 to make 375.
Divide by 5 which makes 75
Subtract 5 which makes 70.
Divide by 7 which makes 10.
So the number I am thinking of is 10.
