The children are really enjoying all the stations.
For P.E. this week, the children had great fun using the new equipment purchased by the school. The Junior & Senior Infants were learning new skills in athletics. They were running, jumping over hurdles, throwing bean bags at a target and learning how to skip.
Aistear / Spraoi
Our theme this month is ‘The Pet Shop’. In the role play area children are working in the pet shop and learning how to care for their pets. In the construction area the boys and girls were making rabbit hutches, toys for the animals and enclosures for their pets. The messy group got to have lots of fun in the new sand pit. And finally in the small world area the children were washing their pets and looking after them in the vets. The boys and girls used our writing station to make signs for their areas.
We went outside for some maths activities. We were learning how to use the number line.
Our Aistear theme for the month of March was 'School'. The children were very busy at each of the stations. They especially enjoyed playing 'teacher' in the role play area and small world.
Our Aistear theme for the month of December was ‘Santa’s Workshop’. In the messy area children were making reindeer food, designing houses from 2D shapes and creating Christmas objects in junk art.
The small world area had a bingo game, a train set which the children used as the polar express and Santa’s house.
In the role play area, the children were busy making toys, wrapping presents, writing lists and doing lots of other elf jobs!
Finally, in construction, the children made Santa’s sleigh, his workshop and some even made Santa himself.
It was a very busy but enjoyable December.

Annual Spring Clean 2016
April Showers
We used spatter painting to make our April Showers. Thankfully we had our umbrellas handy.
Art Appreciation
We have been looking at the work of Henri Matisse. He was a French painter. In his later years he used cuttings of paper to make his art. He called it 'painting with scissors'. "The Snail" is one of these pieces. Have a look at our recreations.
Food Dudes
We were lucky to be chosen to take part in the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Initiative. The children are encouraged to try and taste new fruits and vegetables, such as apples, grapes, bananas, orange, carrots, mangetout, cucumber and peppers. These are delivered fresh to the school each day. Every time they eat a portion they get stickers and rewards. Please encourage your children to continue trying new foods at home.
Shrove Tuesday
We enjoyed some yummy pancakes on Shrove Tuesday with Nutella and syrup thanks to Mrs Tate and Mrs Cassidy.
S.P.H.E. - Our Class Promise

Christmas Shows
On the 11th of December we travelled to The Garage Theatre to see 'Santa's Christmas Wish'. The children really enjoyed the show and got a chance to meet the big man himself.
We entertained our family and friends with a very successful Christmas performance of our own. The Junior and Senior infants recited poems, sang songs and told some festive jokes to the amusement of the crowd. Well done to everyone for all their hard work.
We are different.
We are each individual and unique. We discussed the ways in which we differ. We looked in a mirror and drew a self portrait. What a handsome bunch we are........

Mrs. Tate wishes to welcome the new pupils who have begun their school journey this year. Welcome back to the big boys and girls in Senior Infants. Have a look at what we get up to each term by clicking on the pictures to view our gallery.
GAA Coaching
We enjoyed 6 weeks of Gaelic coaching with Ann this term. We did lots of throwing, catching and kicking drills to improve our Gaelic skills.
Primary Colours
We had great fun learning all about the primary colours: red, yellow and blue. Look at our 'colour mixing' handshakes.....time to get messy!!!
We read the book 'Mouse Paint' by Ellen Stoll Walsh and using it as inspiration, we mixed colours to make our own Mouse Paint wall.
Maths Stations
We enjoyed working in pairs during our maths stations. The junior Infants sorted and classified objects according to size and colour. The Senior Infants counted out sets of cubes and practiced their numeral formation on individual whiteboards.
Autumn Adventures
We took advantage of the beautiful weather and went for an Autumn walk. We looked at the Oak and Horse Chestnut trees in our locality and examined their leaves. The children had great fun gathering conkers, leaves, acorns and beech nuts.
Halloween 2015
We got into the Halloween spirit by making scary monsters from air drying clay. Mrs Tate was really scared!!!
Take a look at our final sculptures!! They were placed on the corridor to scare the rest of the school.....
Sponsored Walk
On Friday 23rd October the children took part in our Halloween Sponsored walk. We were a very scary sight walking into the village dressed in our Halloween costumes. Well done to everyone who raised money.
Pumpkin Carving
We enjoyed helping Mrs. Tate carve a pumpkin for the classroom. The insides were very messy and gooey. Yuk!!! Congratulations to Kian who won the raffle and got to take the pumpkin home.
What a busy term it's been
Our summer term is always very busy and this year has been no exception. have a wee look at what we have been getting up to...
Sports Day
We had our Sports Day on the 16th June. The weather was lovely and it was great to see so many parents out to cheer us on. It was a very successful day and each child went home with at least one medal. A big thank you to Mrs Dowling for organising Sports Day.
Sponsored Walk
Our Sponsored Walk took place on Friday 5th June. Junior infants - Rang 2 set off from the school and walked into the village and back. Well done to all the children who raised much needed funds for our school.
School Tour
On Thurs 21st May, we travelled to the new Fire Station in Monaghan. We were greeted by fireman David who gave us a very detailed tour of the fire station. We got to see the fire engines and hear the siren...it is VERY loud. We climbed the tower where we had a great view, and we got to use the long fire hoses. Some of us tried to soak teacher!!!! We were lucky enough to see the trainee firemen putting out a real fire. It was a really enjoyable day. We would like to thank David Tracey and everyone at Monaghan Fire Station for a great school tour.
Mini-beast hunt
We spent a lovely morning on the look out for creepy crawlies and mini beasts. We found lots of spiders, woodlouse, worms, centipedes, millipedes, slugs, beetles and snails. The children had great fun.
Window Painting
As part of the Paint and Colour strand of the Visual Arts curriculum, we got to paint the windows of our corridor. Mrs. Tate drew the outline of some flowers and mini-beasts and we painted them. It really brightens up the place.
Adding Fun
Junior Infants have been enjoying some problem solving! They were introduced to addition and the symbols + and =. By using the classroom 'Adding Machine' they could solve simple maths problems.
Tidy Towns Poster Competition
We entered the Tidy Towns 'Take-away Litter' poster competition. We enjoyed a lovely morning with Billis school in the Centre for the prize giving. Congratulations to the winners in our class: Emily May McCann and Kayleigh Farmer.
Spring Clean 2015
We did a great clean up of the school grounds with Rang 1 and Rang 2 as part of An Taisce National Spring Clean. We were equipped with gloves and aprons and large bin bags. As we are a Green School a continued effort must be made to keep our school litter free.
Mono printing
We have been experimenting with printing ink and mono prints. It was very messy but great fun and our finish products look great!!
Letter Writing
Senior Infants have been working really hard at their creative writing. They wrote a letter to their friend, addressed the envelop and our Postman Brendan kindly took our letters to the post office. They got a lovely surprise a few days later when the post arrived.
Using nature in our Art
We went on a lovely nature walk around the school in search of things to make pictures with. We found leaves, grasses, petals, twigs and flowers. We carefully arranged these on a sheet on laminating paper to create our pictures. Teacher then laminated each one. The result was very effective and a lovely addition to our corridor. Click on each image to view slideshow.
Easter 2015
We made lovely 'pinch pots' from clay as part of our Visual Arts. When they were dry we painted them. Mrs McGuirk came back to say hello. She gave each of us a beautify hand knitted little chick with a creme egg undermeath. These fit perfectly into our clay Easter pots.
Spring term 2015
Have a look at what we have been doing so far this term. The junior infants enjoyed a fun capacity lesson. We had to determine how many jars of water it took to fill a container. We really enjoyed this lesson. Click on the pictures to view the slideshow.
Maths Number stations
Mrs.Tate set up activities each morning for us to practice our number skills. These activities included making numerals 0-9 out of playdough; practicing numerals 0-9 in sand trays, whiteboards and using shapes; counting objects; recognising numerals 0-9 and matching objects and numerals. These activities were rotated daily so that each child could experience a new activity every day. This was a very enjoyable start to each day.
Art
We looked at the work of Edvard Munch and his very famous painting 'The Scream'. We discussed the use of lines in his painting. The children re-created their own version. Why are they screaming??
We also tried our hand at weaving. We did a little bit in October when we made Halloween spiders but this term we worked hard at getting it right. Firstly we needed lots of practice to get the technique right. We spent time threading beads and pictures as part of our fine motor stations. We then used the simple 'over-under' technique to make Valentine hearts.
Have a look at our lovely Valentine's for our family and friends. Click on the pictures to view slideshow.
Finally, Mrs. Tate made each of us our own 'loom' using a shoe box and the netting found on onions/lemons etc. We used pipe cleaners to weave a pattern 'over and under'. Teacher was very impressed!!
We are very happy with the final result. Have a look....
Shrove Tuesday
On Shrove Tuesday, Mrs. Tate and Mrs. Cassidy treated us to lovely, yummy pancakes. We really enjoyed them.
Happy St. Patrick's Day
The road to Glaslough was awash with 40 shades of green on Friday 13th as part of our annual 'Feet First Friday' for St. Patrick's Day. We all wore green, Mrs. Tate did some face painting and we enjoyed a lovely snack thanks to the Parents Association.
Spring has sprung
We were very lucky to have Ms McGuirk in on teaching practice this month. We did some wonderful lessons on the theme of 'spring'. Have a look at the lovely art work we did.
GAA Coaching
We have been brushing up on our Gaelic skills this term with GAA coach Marty. We have really enjoyed getting active and we promise to continue practicing our skills at home. Click on the images to view the slideshow.
November 2014
After a lovely Halloween break, we are back fresh and eager to learn lots of new things. Have a look at what we have been getting up to.
Fine Motor Stations
Mrs.Tate set up activities each morning for us to practice our fine motor skills. These activities included peg boards, play dough, cutting, threading, beads etc. These activities were rotated daily so that each child could experience a new activity every day.
Measures
The pupils in Junior Infants were exploring Measures. They had to determine who had more/less of something. Can you see who has more? Who has less?
Our Senses
We had great fun in Science and SPHE exploring our 5 senses: hear, see, touch, smell and taste. We listened to indoor and outdoor sounds, we looked at each others work, we felt rough and smooth surfaces, we tasted a variety of foods and we had to guess the smell.
We had to guess the food by its taste: carrot sticks, cheese cubes, apple, lemon, crisps, sweets and orange segments. We preferred some foods more than others.

We tried to identify things by smell: vinegar, coffee, soap. This was quite hard. Only Jay identified the three scents.
We had to describe the following tastes: lemon, jellies, crisps. We used the words bitter or sour, sweet and salty. We really enjoyed this activity.....well maybe not the lemon tasting- have a look at some of our faces!!
When all our experimenting was over we got to enjoy the rest of the yummy treats.
Making Christmas Decorations
We made a salt dough in the Infant classes to create our Christmas decorations. We used flour, salt and water. We measured, mixed and kneaded the dough before rolling it into a round shape. We pressed our hand in to the dough to make a hand print and left them to dry.
When our dough handprints had dried we painted and decorated them. We chose to do Christmas trees, Santa's and reindeer. Have a look at our finished masterpieces. Click on the picture to enlarge.
Advent
To celebrate Advent we created a beautiful Christmas tree using our cutting, pasting, painting and decorating skills. Behind each numbered bauble is a picture of someone in our class. There is great excitement each morning when teacher reveals the picture. The countdown has begun!!
Wishing all our families and friends a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Welcome back, Sept 2014
Mrs Tate welcomed her new Junior Infants and returning Senior infant class for 2014-15. We are looking forward to learning lots of new things this year.
A splash of colour
We have been busy discussing the Primary Colours: Red, Yellow and Blue, as part of the 'paint and colour' strand of the Visual Arts curriculum. The children used only these colours to create a painting. They really brighten up our corridor.
'Early Mathematic Activities' were the main focus this month in Maths for the Junior Infants. We spent time identifying, sorting, classifying and matching objects from our classroom. We used these activites to reinforce our knowledge of colours. We had lots of fun!!
Piet Mondrian
As a follow on from looking at the Primary Colours, we studied the artist Piet Mondrian. The children discussed some of his work and style of painting. We discovered that he was a teacher from Holland. He used the primary colours a lot in his painting as well as lines and shapes. We recreated one of his famous paintings 'Composition C'
Computers
The new Junior Infants got the chance to visit our computer room for the very first time. With the help of Miss Treanor, the children get the chance to use the educational software we have in the school. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children which they really enjoy.
Conas atá tú?
We learned the following phrases in Gaeilge:
Tá áthas orm.
Tá brón orm.
Tá eagla orm.
Tá fearg orm.
Tá áthas orm.
Tá brón orm.
Tá eagla orm.
Tá fearg orm.
Autumn
We made pictures by printing, using our fingers, hands, and feet.
Our finger printed apples on our trees were inspired by the song 'The farmer has an orchard.'

Halloween
We used our footprints to make Halloween ghosts. They created a spooky atmosphere in our corridor. Have a look if you are brave enough...
We also made hand print spiders in their webs based on the nursery rhyme 'Incy Wincy Spider'.
The Senior Infants enjoyed some Halloween writing using the new vocabulary the learned. This was displayed for everyone to read. Well done senior infants...lovely writing.
Sponsored Walk
On Friday 24th Oct the Junior and Senior Infants took part in the sponsored walk organised to raise funds for the school. They came into school dressed in their Halloween costumes and Mrs. Tate did some face painting. We walked into the village and back, scaring the motorists and residents we met along the way. The Parents Association provided some lovely Halloween treats on our return. It was a really enjoyable day. Congratulations to all involved.
The new pupils enjoyed their first P.E. lessons. We played some warm up games called cups and saucers and chocolate chip cookies. We also practised throwing and catching using the underarm throw. We had competitions to see who could do the most catches without dropping the beanbag.
Halloween 2013
We have been learning about the spider in S.E.S.E. It belongs to the Arachnid family and it has eight legs and eight eyes. It can spin a web and eats flies!!! We made our very own spider 'pets' in Art using clay, pipe cleaners and straws. They make a great spooky addition to our Halloween decorations.
We have been discussing Oíche Shamhna in Irish. We learned a poem called 'An Cat' and talked about úlla, cnónna and enjoyed some báirín breac. Some of us liked it more than others!!
Friday the 25th October was Feet First Friday for Halloween. The pupils were encouraged to walk to school from the village as an ongoing part of our Travel theme. They dressed up in their Halloween costumes. I'd say the motorists got a fright by the look of some or our monsters, witches and wizards. Thank you to the Parents Association for supplying yummy Halloween treats.
Summer Term 2013
Healthy Eating
In S.P.H.E. this term we were talking about healthy eating. As a special treat Mrs.Tate brought in a selection of fruit for us to sample. We really enjoyed our healthy snack.
Problem Solving
Mrs.Tate got the opportunity to borrow a big box of puzzles from the Education Centre. Over the course of a week in April we experimented with these games and used our problem solving skills to decipher, decode and solve the puzzles. We had great fun.
Spring Clean 2013
On the 16th April we did a big Spring Clean of the school grounds and surrounding areas. Junior and Senior Infants, with first and second class, were assigned to the areas around the school itself. Aprons, gloves, litter pickers and bin bags were provided by Monaghan County Council. The school was spotless by the time we were finished.
Heritage Days 4 and 5
Junior and Senior infants were very excited about the fourth visit from Catríona Mc Cabe on 24th April. They couldn’t wait to learn more about mini beasts and go hunting for them!! She began by showing the children how to use ‘pooters’….little devices for sucking up insects. They were all given small collecting jars, magnifying glasses and pooters.
Our mini beast hunt centred on the biodiversity garden. The children overturned the stones in our rock pile and looked under any logs they found. They recorded the different mini beasts they found on a chart. They found woodlouse, spiders, worms, ladybirds, beetles and millipedes.

Our final Heritage Day with Catríona took place on Thurs 23rd May 2013. This last workshop was in relation to wild flowers. The children in Junior and Senior infants were looking forward to meeting Catríona again and learning more about the flowers growing around the school and indeed in their gardens at home.
On a walk around the school grounds, the following flowers were identified by the children: dandelion, daisy, buttercup, clover. Catríona explained how plants get their food and she did a very clever experiment to demonstrate this. She put food colouring into a cup and added some wild flowers. The next day the children noted that the petals of the flowers had tinges of the food colouring on them. This could be easily seen on the white petal of the daisies.

Dance
For the past 6 weeks the infants have been enjoying the Dance strand of our P.E. curriculum. As part of these lessons the children were encouraged to move to music. To develop rhythm, we had to march, skip, gallop and sway to the music. We also learned a simple 'heel and toe' dance.
The Teddy Bear's Picnic
On Thurs 30th May Junior and Senior infants travelled to U.S. Grants Ancestral Homestead in Dungannon for their annual Teddy Bear's Picnic. We enjoyed the entertainment by Betty Bear as she juggled, spun plates and showed us dance moves. We had a lovely picnic lunch in the glorious sunshine and got the opportunity to use the play park. We were all very tired that evening. It was a great day.
Pancake Tuesday
We celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes in school. Mrs Tate and Mrs Cassidy were busy flipping and serving and we enjoyed lovely warm pancakes with nutella.
Spring has sprung
We are finally seeing the early signs of spring after a very cold winter. Our daffodils have begun to bloom and buds are appearing on the trees around the school. We have even spotted some lively young lambs in the surrounding fields. The children created a collage and did some lovely writing following our discussions of spring. These are displayed on the corridor.
Heritage Day 3
Catriona from the Heritage council came back to talk to us about bees. She told us all about the queen bee and her hard working bees and how they use flowers to make honey. She showed us a wonderful bee hive and the honeycomb where the bees make the honey. She then showed us how to make 'Bee Bombs'..... a novel way to disperse wild flower seeds to attract bees.

Some Seasonal Snippets
We participated in the Feet First Friday walk to school. We dressed in green in honour of St. Patrick. Teacher didn't recognise some of us!!!
We made lovely Easter cards with the help of Mrs Williamson in the computer room and we made easter baskets in Art. Teacher put some little chocolate eggs into each one, although some didn't make it past the classroom door, YUMMY!!
Chuaigh mé go dtí an siopa.
In Irish this term we have been learning words and phrases relating to 'the shop'. Mrs Tate set up our Siopa Bia and we enjoyed using our irish phrases in our role play.
Water, water everywhere.....
The children in Junior Infants enjoyed a fun and messy Maths lesson when we explored Capacity. They were given the task of estimating and measuring how many cupfuls of water a selection of containers held, however much of the water ended up around the sink rather than in the containers!!!!! Who had the steadiest hand?
We had a very busy run up to Christmas and the new term is proving eventful also. Have a look at what we have been getting up to.
Walking in a Winter Wonderland!!
In science, we observed the changes in the seasons. We went for a walk around our local environment to spot some of the signs of winter.
Budding Mathematicians....
In Maths, the pupils in Senior Infants have been exploring all the components of the numbers up to 10. We examined how numbers are partitioned and recorded our answers numerically. Working in pairs, we used cubes, bears, blocks, etc. and teacher took photos of us in action.
Our Senses
Teacher set up ‘sense stations’ in the classroom to explore ‘Our Senses’. We had great fun at the ‘smelling station’ where we had to guess the smell: soap, vinegar, coffee and crisps. Only two pupils could identify all four smells.
We also put our taste buds to the test at the ‘tasting station’. We sampled food that was bitter (lemon), sweet (chocolate) and salty (crisps).
This was a great fun and we really enjoyed it.....well maybe not the lemon tasting…. Have a look at some of our faces!!!

Green Schools Committee
The Green Schools representatives for the Biodiversity Flag were chosen in our class. They are: Alex Deery in Junior Infants and Niamh Kelly in Senior Infants.
September 2012
Our theme for the month of September was ‘Colour’. We spent time
talking about and looking at colours in our environment, with particular focus on the Primary Colours. Here we are in action painting with the Primary Colours.
