5th / 6th Class Cycle to Mullan Village
On 14th October 2020 the children cycled to the picturesque Mullan village. It was quite a challenging trip of approx. 17km.
Bicycles were prepared and cleaned in advance. Dan provided assistance for those with no bicycles and Odhran provided the pump just at the right time for Patricia. Finn was on stand by too to lend a hand with any repairs.
This was a great event – the weather was kind and the scenery beautiful. We kept to the quieter roads – past Donagh graveyard, Oisín’s house, The Villa pitch, McQuaid’s shop and the onwards through Killycooly to Mullan. The route was fairly flat and roads were quiet.
We arrived in Mullen after an hour or so, parked our bicycles and had our picnic. Some of the pupils explored the mill and houses of this beautiful border village.
Our return journey took us back via Monmurry, Darragh’s house and Mullaliss.
One group ( Patricia, Kian, Alice, Emily May and Charlotte ) decided to go a different route as they believed the main ‘Pack’ would slow them down !!
We met some local people and also got to know a few dogs too. Jessica and Odhran had to escort one dog back home. The children all loved their cycling experience – the first time we have all cycled to this part of the county.

Forest School
In the months of September / October the pupils of 5th/6th classes had 4 trips to Castle Leslie Estate to take part in Forest School outdoor activities.
We are so grateful to Castle Leslie for giving us access to their beautiful estate. The woodland is perfect for Forest School.
What is Forest School : It’s an inspirational process that offers all learners opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.
Tom Ronaghan wrote, ‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Management of Castle Leslie Estate for letting us use your forest for 4 memorable experiences.’
These educational activities involved using the world of Nature to explore and to learn.
Barney McQuaid –‘ I am very grateful for the 4 days we got away from doing Maths !!!!! I loved the walks, the scenery and the wildlife. I also loved the broad tree that has a small cliff under it. It was kinda sandy like a small beach.’
Alice Duffy wrote,‘Castle Leslie is very beautiful and relaxing. I love all the nature, the sound of the birds and the rustling of the leaves. It’s a very good place for the school as it’s close to the school and open so you can play lots of activities.’
On day one we constructed rafts and tested them out on the edge of Glaslough. Everything seemed to float !!

Madisen Skye Tracey wrote,’We built rafts. First we gathered six to 8 sticks and made them all the same size. Then we tied them together with some twine. When they were finished we found a deep enough bit of water and tested them to see if they floated.’
Jessica Rushe –‘On day one we sat down in the forest and did some mindfulness. After that we spread out and set some boundaries with our high Viz vests. This meant we couldn’t go past the boundaries and stayed in a safe area.
Day two – the children constructed ‘Waterproof’ huts and shelters. The finished products were absolutely amazing – guaranteed to protect you from the elements in the harshest weather conditions.

Matthew Mohan wrote :- ‘I loved every trip but my favourite has to be the 2nd one where we made huts out of twigs, leaves and moss to make it waterproof. I was put in a group with my friends Tom, Kian, Darragh and Finn. We found a flat stable space to build our hut. Teamwork was a huge part of this activity. When we built ours we started gathering moss and big leaves and when we tested it, it was indeed waterproof. I loved being able to see what we could do with the forests’ resources. It was a memorable experience.’
Cillan McKenna –‘my favourite activity was building huts. We had to collect sticks and moss and all sorts of building materials. The 6th class boys made a hut and it was a great success.
Day 3 :- The main part of the third day was spent making clay faces on the trees. You can see for yourself the finished result – each face different and so well done.

Emily May McCann –' on the 3rd day we did clay faces on the trees. We used Terracotta clay so it would dissolve into the ground and turn into soil. We used moss and leaves to decorate the faces'.
On day 4 we played some forest games and went on a long walk to the other side of the lake. Here the children explored among the trees at the water’s edge and practiced jumping over the Cross Country jumps – not on horse back but on foot.

Madison Fitzpatrick wrote, ‘My favourite place is the cross country jumps beside the lake. We had such fun jumping over all the jumps. I’m a big horse lover and I would love to try all these jumps on a real horse. This was one of the best days in 5th class so far. I loved running around with not a care in the world’.
Barney ‘ I loved these 4 days. I honestly think they were the best 4 days of Primary School. My favourite day was the 4th – running through bushes and hiding from Mr Macklin and 6th class. I loved skipping stones on the lake and there was a weird tree. It was hollow inside and even Darragh could fit inside in it.’
A part of each day was observing the natural world – the trees, leaves, wild flowers, birds and animals. It was an amazing experience for the children.
Kayleigh Farmer loved seeing Deer and a pheasant as well as red squirrels.
So the message is : get out there and explore the world around you. There’s so much to do and see and it’s on our doorstep.
Oisín McQuaid says a big Thank you to Castle Leslie –‘My name is Oisín McQuaid, a student at St Mary’s National School. I want to thank you for letting us use the Castle Leslie Estate. These 4 days have definitely been the best school days ever. The estate is so beautiful and green. I would love to fish in the lake. It’s great that you don’t chop the trees down.’

Pupils as global citizens can play their part by taking part in the Awards and engaging with these issues.
This year’s theme, One World, One Future, invites pupils to learn about the Global Goals and how Irish Aid is working hard to create a better world and a better future for children living in poverty.

Here is a recount of our enjoyable day. . . . . .
I want to tell you about 'Bee-Line', an amazing project that my class undertook. The project was part of a cross border project aimed at bringing communities together.
First we put on our helmets and hi-viz jackets. Then Mr Macklin and Miss Treanor checked our bikes. After that we were off.
We were cycling down the hill next to the school. We either had to get off our bikes and walk or risk it and hope our brakes would slow us down. We stopped at Leslie's Estate entrance for a break. When we got to the bridge at Middletown, Caolán found a dead squirrel and we viewed the Silver Bee's Statue. When we arrived in the village we parked our bikes to keep them safe. A few special guests made speeches and then we had some yummy lunch.
On our way back we met a man called Hugh Conway and he took a photo of us all outside his house.
After a hard day of cycling we welcomed being back at school and got back to our work!

Bikes checked, water on board and the sun was shining as we set off on our annual 4 Village Cycle. Our first stop was Middletown as we took time to admire our Bee Sculpture being displayed in the centre of the village. We were very lucky to have the opportunity to have a look around Tynan Estate and Abbey, with thanks to Dave and Patricia Murphy-Thom and Fiona Curly. Dave gave us a brief history of the estate and afterwards we enjoyed a quick snack in their beautiful gardens.
Next stop was Tynan village and then onto Caledon where the children were put into teams and took part in a history quiz of the village. We also enjoyed a healthy lunch along the River Blackwater.
On our way home we were treated to coffee and scones in Matthew Duffy's house and big thanks to his Mammy, Trudie, for spoiling us.

Irish Primary Schools Debating Competition
Like last year, our School entered the Irish Primary Schools Debating competition for 2014-2015. Our first task was to select six children for the team. We had four debates in class with some very heated discussions on topics such as 'Ryanair is the World's Best Airline' and 'Small Country Schools Should Close'. Each pupil had to speak for or against the motion for a period of one to three minutes. After these debates, we finalised our teams. The team selected are as follows : Matthew Duffy, Aine Aughey, Ben Duffy, Bríd Mc Nally, Darcy Colleran and Courtney Molloy . We had a friendly debate against Corracrin to get us warmed up.
Our first debate was against Tydavnet N.S on Friday, 28th November in Tydavnet National School. The motion for debate was 'Every Child in 5th / 6th should have a mobile phone' and we were against the motion.
It was a super debate with some fantastic arguments from both sides. Tydavnet came out winners and went on to take part in the county finals. We wish them the very best of luck!

Report by Ben Duffy 6th class on our first football match played on home ground.
On the 19th September 2014, Knockconan came to St. Mary's N.S. to play us in a game of Gaelic. At 11a.m., the girls played an opening match. It was Ard Mhaca (Armagh) v''s Baile Atha Cliath (Dublin). In the middle of the girls match we saw their bus pull up. The adrenalin was pumping. To our surprise a team of girls came out. We found out that they didn't know it was supposed to be an all boys match.
The match kicked off at around quarter past eleven. We started off strong. Pauric scored the first goal and Caolán scored the first point. By half time the score was 5 all. We swapped places and then we started the match. At the start of the second half we slowly started to slip. We tried as hard as we could but sadly knockconan got in there and beat us 17-12. We were sad but we were happy to play against Knockconan. It was a lot of fun. Chanon got 'Player of the Match'. I myself, was captain and I had a lot of fun. I think 'Sir' was very pleased with our effort.
Art
The children undertook a study of the art works of Pierre - Auguste Renoir.
They attempted to recreate Renoir's famous work 'The Umbrellas' in the medium of watercolours. This painting depicts a busy Paris Street in the rain. They applied the same technique as the artist i.e. use of quick brush strokes and selection of delicate colours.
During his lifetime Renoir painted over 6000 paintings. Along with Claude Monet, he helped to launch an artistic movement called 'Impressionism' in 1870. 'The Umbrellas' is now housed in The National Gallery of London.
They also studied the work of Vincent Van Gogh.
Below is the children's interpretation of the artists most famous work 'Starry Night'.
He painted this work of art in 1889. Alas for Van Gogh he spent most of his adult life in poverty, only managing to sell one of his paintings for 400 francs just three months before his death. He died in 1890 aged 37.
Clay Houses designed and created by Rang 5 & 6.
The pupils in the senior classes showed great creativity in art class recently by sculpting their vision of a homestead in the medium of clay.
They took inspiration from Padraic Colum's Poem 'Old Woman of the Roads'.
Let's hope the Property Tax is not applicable to the following homes!
Appreciate the photos and recapture your school days by reading the poem below.
Old Woman of the Roads
O, to have a little house!
To own the hearth and stool and all!
The heaped up sods against the fire,
The pile of turf against the wall!
To have a clock with weights and chains
And pendulum swinging up and
down!
A dresser filled with shining delph,
Speckled and white and blue
and brown!
I could be busy all the day
Clearing and sweeping hearth and
floor,
And fixing on their shelf again
My white and blue and speckled
store!
I could be quiet there at night
Beside the fire and by myself,
Sure of a bed and loth to leave
The ticking clock and the shining delph!
Och! but I'm weary of mist and dark,
And roads where there's never a
house nor bush,
And tired I am of bog and road,
And the crying wind and
the lonesome hush!
And I am praying to God on high,
And I am praying Him
night and day,
For a little house - a house of my own
Out of the wind's
and the rain's way.
